Bonus: Broadcast Journalism

Through video, audio, and social media, I've learned to amplify others’ voices, share meaningful stories, and to engage audiences beyond written articles. I first started with creating Sacred Hearts Academy’s first video production club, called Lancers Keep it Reel (LKIR). Serving as the president and founder, I helped produce two short films, and since then, I've also seen the work that's put into our Instagram and Ka Leo Konvos podcast as Editor-In-Chief.

“Believe It or Not, I Care,” which aired on PBS Hawai'i’s HIKI NŌ program

In my freshman year at Sacred Hearts Academy as a first-year reporter, I took on all roles, including the reporter, camera person, editor, and scriptwriter for a short film which aired on PBS Hawai'i’s HIKI NŌ program, called “Believe It or Not, I Care.” This story follows a group called the B.I.O.N.I.C. Lancers, a team of Sacred Hearts Academy students who reach out to other students who might be facing hard times. The short film dives into the impact they make around campus, while following testimonies from students who were helped by them. From the video, I went on to be recognized and win the Student Voice Award at the Mental Health America reception, and I gave a speech after accepting the award on the importance of lifting student voices and being there for the people around you.

Instagram Reel Videos

Ka Leo uses Instagram to give more people the opportunity to discover our publication and get them excited to read our articles coming out on the Ka Leo website. More recently, we've implemented that instead of regular still posts, we do interactive reels, not only to pique people's interest, but also because reels are known to be better at reaching more people since reels are pushed to non-followers as well as followers, compared to regular posts. Not only is it better for engagement, but it also gives us the ability to be more creative with the visuals.

"Ka Leo Konvos" Podcast

The “Ka Leo Konvos" Podcast is another way for the journalists at Ka Leo to express their passion for storytelling by creating audio-only content with interviews (Q&A style) or important discussions that matter to our school community and beyond. The podcast also allows our journalists to learn the importance of telling a story with only their voice, which makes them hone pacing, tone, and clarity, while engaging a different audience than we might do when it comes to our articles. To make the podcast fun and exciting to viewers, Ka Leo focuses on having diverse conversations such as entertainment, teen mental health, important events, college, and politics.
