Bonus: Web and Social Media

Website

The Ka Leo website serves as the main platform for our newspaper for publishing as well as archiving articles, with regularly updated content, using it to showcase many diverse multimedia pieces. Beyond our articles, the website also showcases staff profiles, photo galleries, and even student-produced podcasts! To increase audience engagement on the website, we include interactive polls on our site to encourage them to interact with the website. For Ka Leo, not only is the website used as a publishing platform, but also a learning resource for beginning journalists.

Wordpress

Sacred Hearts Academy’s publication, Ka Leo, is online and therefore uses a website. Our website is under WordPress, which is the content management system (CMS) that Ka Leo uses in order to publish our content online. To post, we use our login (each student has a unique account) and publish through the backend dashboard. Our staff is introduced to WordPress in their first year and learns core skills such as creating, editing, and posting visuals, as well as handling comments and staff profiles. While editing, there's a lot of technicality involved, such as image sizing, which will be most eye-catching. As Editor-In-Chief, I guide 20 new students through these tools to ensure polished, quality content that boosts readership and views.

Instagram (Reels)

Our Instagram is important because it gives more people the opportunity to discover our publication through short, colorful reels that increase our engagement rates, as well as pique students' interests using a modern, youthful platform. Using the same template created at the start of the year, we maintain consistency in our posts, drive up engagement by utilizing tags, and collaborate with Sacred Hearts Academy’s Instagram to amplify our followers. Also, we do biweekly polls to find out what the audience is interested in more, to figure out how to appeal to the crowd.
